Surrealism
His experience with drawing for product communication and presentation as an industrial designer, was a starting point for his transition into the visual arts. Quartel is fascinated by the craft of oil painting. With an eye for detail, his portraits are inspired by great masters such as Rembrandt and Da Vinci, who according to him knew how to paint “the light of the soul." His quest for meaning takes place from the subconscious. Here he is inspired by the Surrealists. This results in realistic paintings of unusual, magical images. Here the foundations are made for the major theme in his work: the relationship between matter and the immaterial meaning of light He goes on a spiritual quest. The development in his work to abstraction is the next step. -- Hester Jenkings, Art Historian, Museum Drachten |
